I realized this is a better shot though, as it doesn't have my head's shadow in the middle of it..

No offense taken, though my deviation was posted a good 3.5+ years before yours, and I took the photo back in 2005. That's not to say I didn't draw upon a good number of sources of inspiration of my own. :] Art constantly appropriates ideas from other sources and other artists. True originality is fleeting and the pursuit of it is basically futile.

well you never know when you'll need one. what if your house is on fire and you need to retreive something. if only i could show you how to test the seal...

what if iran decides to dump chemical bombs on you. i know it sounds rediculous but you never really do know.

Mmm yes.. But I'd rather just not worry about those situations. There are so many other more likely ways that I might die, like while driving to school on tuesday, or catching a disease, or even an airplane crash. Yes, I'm aware of the possible situations in which I might need a gas mask, but there are so many things to worry about, that I just can't worry about everything. I just wouldn't be able to function if I was paranoid about every possible situation for disaster.

i hate gas masks. if you had to wear them like i've got to wear them you would too. i got a good gas mask though, he's new, and he's in good condition, never lets me down.

Mmm yes, I'm sure I would. I can't stand wearing that one for more than about 5 minutes tops. It's an israeli gas mask. I have another one in the bottom of my closet, but I haven't looked into its origins. The script on the box for the other one kind of gave it away.

is that gas mask in your closet have weight on top of it? you know, they have to be stored laying on their face without weight on top of them otherwise over time they develope tiny holes and cracks that in a toxic environment would make the mask almost useless.

Well, I don't keep 'em for any real purpose. My brother got 'em from some crazy relative or for a joke or something back in elementary school. He moved out, I claimed his room, and found 'em in the closet. The israeli one is kept in its box. The other one is in a big plastic box with legos or something in a stack of boxes in the corner of my closet. I'm not sure if it has anything on top of it within the box or not. It's been about a year since I last saw it. Luckily, I'm essentially in Suburbia, USA, and not too terribly paranoid, so one fairly functional gasmask ought to be more than enough if the closet-bound one is out of order.
